www.transartadmissions.org

About Transart Institute
INTERNATIONAL Diaspora, Post-Nationalism and Post-Colonialism; Identity; Exile; Role of Art in Peace and Mediation; Space In Between; Home; Temporary Architecture; Cultural Engagement through Food; Foreignness, Otherness and the Uncanny; and Publicness, Collaboration and the Social are areas Transart Institute is paricularly interested in supporting and instigating research, projects and practices in. We champion independent thinking, expermentation and informed endeavors.

WE BEGAN as an independent,
utopian, post-national and transdisciplinary "unschool art school,"
embodying the idea that participation in a vibrant and current graduate
experience requires nomadic possibilities untethered to geography. The
focus and strength of Transart has centered on an exceptional international
teaching, research and learning program that leads to an MFA or PhD in
creative, curatorial and transcultural practices. Adopting a respiratory
model of meeting and dispersing, Transart positions itself in the gaps
where art practice, knowledge production and research processes operate; in
the tensions between, across, through and beyond recognised paradigms.
Encouraging active student-driven learning over passive educational models,
our students and faculty—from all over the planet—meet
bi-annually as we continue to work wherever we live, actively supported by
the Transart community.

WE BELIEVE that education is not just a paper-chase and is most relevant, effective and powerful when vitally connected to projects and initiatives in the world—beyond the walls of the academy. By its very nature, Transart creates international research communities that encourage and promote dialogue and collaboration between artists, writers, curators and thinkers across cultures. Driven by our students desires rather than the demands of bureaucracy and real estate we remain agile, responsive and nomadic; currently meeting in Berlin and New York with plans afoot to include Mexico City and Melbourne.

AFTER TEN YEARS of
remarkable development we are now entering the next phase in our evolution.
The "transartist" vision is continually amplified by a growing global
network of artists, curators and creative thinkers working collectively in
hybrid ways that span engaged sites and interactive online spaces from
Brazil to Australia, Ethiopia to Canada, Pakistan to Iceland. These
reverberating actions further stimulate emergent streams of public
programming and events such as the Transart Triennale, ELSE Journal
and NEST (New Experiments for Sharing Terrain) and drive our educational
curiosity even further. This exciting moment finds Transart again at the
cutting edge of what schools, arts institutions, communities and broader
cultural experiences might be in the twenty-first century. Transart
Institute was founded by two artists and remains operated entirely by
artists.

Transart Institute
The Un-School for

On December 26th at 12:30PM MiYeon Kwon and Chicago's Prak-sis / Gaci Project at 16 W. Ontario is pleased to host Joshua Selman and associates of Artist Organized Art to talk about Artist Organized Art’s mission and some of its ongoing and past projects. From its roots in New York City’s alternative art culture, such as Fluxus/Intermedia, Something Else Press, New Observations Magazine, The International Artists Museum and the Lance Fung & Emily Harvey Galleries, to its ongoing support of artist organized media, events and cultural education, the 501(c)3 engages with artist organizers in and out of spaces around the world. Over four years ago Artist Organized Art identified MiYeon Kwon, who Founded Prak-sis, as an especially promising artist organizer developing in the Chicago area. For the first time an artist meeting between both organizations will take place in celebration of the new Prak-sis / Gaci Project space at 16 W. Ontario, Chicago, Illinois.

Joshua Selman of Artist Organized Art performing "Full Message"
Western Mass, 2013

Joshua Selman is an artist, composer and graduate of Yale University with a Master of Music Composition whose intermedia practice combines public space intervention, large-scale installation, cultural-strategy and critical journalism. His sound work is included on Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Cologne, Germany. He’s also known for performance works and objects with unique virality. Some were included in a Whitney Museum Ray Johnson retrospective. Other collaborations are with Fluxus founders Alison Knowles and late intermedia theorist Dick Higgins. He first exhibited as an intermedia artist at the SOHO NY Fluxus venue, Emily Harvey Gallery. His participation in several artist organized biennials known as Construction in Process led to a post as Executive Director of The International Artists Museum, New York Center. He’s also documented as a commercial innovator in social networks, by Wired Online in 2004, and referenced in a Facebook patent. In 2003, he launched the online space Artist Organized Art. In 2007, as President, he established Artist Organized Art, a new media based arts organization, as a tax-exempt 501(c)3. In late 2008 he guided Artist Organized Art to acquire New Observations LTD, publisher of New Observations Magazine, with a mandate to relaunch the seminal arts publication. He has gained long term support for the organization from Google Inc. His networked activities now include thousands of artists in the Americas, Europe, Asia and beyond. Residencies include South Korea, Germany, Australia, Canada, the USA and soon China. His works in Performa, on the High Line, other appearances and interviews are documented in print, on the web and on television.

Artist Organized Art, Inc. was formed in 2007 exclusively for literary, educational and charitable purposes. Specifically, Artist Organized Art, Inc. operates under the premise that when artists themselves organize the community of art practice, new and relevant advances in art history occur. Originally founded as a web project in 2003 by Joshua Selman (formerly an Executive Director of The International Artists Museum, New York Center, Inc.) and rooted in the legacy of self organizing communities of artists such as the Fluxus, The International Artists Museum and others, Artist Organized Art, Inc. exists to help thousands of artists voice their contributions to the fields of art history and art criticism while supporting them as artist-organizers working independently of museums and galleries.

Whereas currently the art world is dominated by an art market which requires a great deal of sophistication on the part of the wider community, through the open access attributes of Artist Organized Art, Inc. many artists can engage their wider communities of artists and the general public on a literary, educational and cultural level directly, without intermediaries. The result is the growing acceptance of artist organized art as a vital category of art practice and cultural exchange.

Today, Artist Organized Art non-profit works with artists & institutions to support artist organized media, events & cultural education by strategic, collaborative & financial means. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization it provides strategic support to artists and organizations working in & benefiting communities everywhere in the world. Its current following has an all time high of over 150,000 subscribers. Email announcements reach 75,000+ global arts professionals & their followers: 44% North America, 33% Europe, 23% Asia and beyond. Artist Organized Art is advised by, followed by & supported by many independent artists, organizers, curators, historians and institutions, including founding members of Fluxus, members of the International Artists Museum and the publishers of New Observations Magazine.

Prak-sis Contemporary Art Association (Praksis CAA) and Geon-Art Case International (GACI) Project offer a cozy fine art gallery just north of Chicago downtown. The space welcomes Chicago's local community and visitors by providing memorable art experiences and showing stunning art.

GACI Project works with many different artists from nascent to experienced emphasizing the development of their brands as well as enhancing their art careers under director, Mi-yeon (Gwon) Kwon. At G-Art Case, particular attention is paid to solo projects and to representing artists' works on a smaller scale in a gallery for art lovers and collectors.

GACI Project is created by Prak-sis Contemporary Art Association which is a non-profit organization emphasizing art career development and art education. Prak-sis Contemporary Art Association was founded in January 2009 as a not for profit art organization. Prak-sis is a dynamic art experience, migrating to diverse locations across the cityscape. For projects since the Fall of 2010, Prak-sis has worked with small businesses and neighborhood support organizations for mutual benefit. With technology flooding our modern lives, we seek to promote art in new media as well as traditional art forms. Prak-sis continues to further develop and focus on online projects as we organize physical art exhibitions, bridging the gap between new technologies and traditional artistic practices.

New York, NY – On Thursday, November 19th from 6-9PM, THE VALUE OF FOOD, curated by Robin Kahn and Kirby Gookin at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, is pleased to host "Red Beans All Day" as part of the Celebration Red series by Fluxus/Intermedia artist Alison Knowles.

The public is invited to come have a bowl of red beans prepared as art in The Cathedral at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street in Manhattan. Serving food in the context of art is a specialty of Alison Knowles, who has performed other food events like "Make a Salad" at venues such as The Tate Modern, The High Line and The Walker Art Center. "Make a Salad" debuted at the ICA in London in the early 1960's and has taken everyday life into art and art into everyday life ever since. "The Identical Lunch", another Alison Knowles food event, derives from a recipe for a tuna fish sandwich and has iconified early participants in the work by way of screen printed portraits also titled "The Identical Lunch". Today the prints and the performance itself are part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.

Last month in Paris, Alison Knowles was a guest at "Take Me (I'm yours)" curated by Christian Boltanski, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Chiara Parisi at the Monnaie de Paris which featured her "Homage to Each Red Thing", an installation of red objects brought by the people of the city. Like "Red Beans All Day", "Homage to Each Red Thing" is part of her ongoing series Celebration Red. About this she says "Curators Robin Kahn and Kirby Gookin have given me generous inclusion in their marathon exhibition about the value of food. I'll perform "Red Beans All Day" from my own caldron and recipe. Also, we'll have a grid where guests can place a single red object to display. Some of these objects will appear in my new prints."

The Value of Food (www.valueoffood.org): Sustaining a Green Planet is an art exhibition hosted by The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, in keeping with its long history of engagement with issues of social justice, the environment, support for the arts, and community involvement. Guest curated by Kirby Gookin and Robin Kahn, the exhibition focuses on food security, accessibility, and sustainability by bringing together artists who not only grapple with these issues, but also actively engage the audience. Installed in the bays and chapels inside the Cathedral, as well as throughout the gardens, the exhibition is divided into seven thematic sections: Water, Soil, Seed, Farm, Market, Meal, and Waste, a reflection of the cycle of food production. Additionally, the Cathedral will host a number of presentations and workshops by speakers who make community outreach and participation a central part of their practice. These programs will include, but are not limited to, panels on urban farming, labor rights, the history of the dishes that many of us know and love, and the relationships between food and faith. The Value of Food runs from October 6, 2015 to April 3, 2016. The exhibition is on view during the Cathedral's regular hours, 7:30 am to 6 pm, seven days a week. (Please note that there is limited access to parts of the Cathedral on Sundays, full access on Sundays is typically between 1 and 3 pm.)

Unlimited: Presenting 74 ambitious and large-scale works spanning five decades

Unlimited, Art Basel’s unique platform for artworks that transcend the traditional art-fair stand, will this year present 74 projects from galleries participating in the show. Curated for the fourth consecutive year by Gianni Jetzer, curator-at-large at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., Unlimited will showcase a strong selection of works by renowned international artists including Ai Weiwei, Kenneth Anger, John M. Armleder, Ed Atkins, Kader Attia, Julius von Bismarck, Martin Boyce, Martin Creed, Olafur Eliasson, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Dan Flavin, Gilbert & George, John Gerrard, Shilpa Gupta, Jeppe Hein, Pierre Huyghe, Robert Irwin, Jannis Kounellis, Ryan McGinley, Bruce Nauman, Roman Ondák, Pedro Reyes, David Shrigley, Gary Simmons, Lorna Simpson, Sturtevant and Zhang Enli.

Since first introduced at Art Basel in 2000, Unlimited has become a key element of the show, providing galleries with an opportunity to showcase large-scale sculptures, video projections, installations, wall paintings, photographic series and performance art which could not be exhibited in a gallery booth.

Highlights of Unlimited will include Ai Weiwei’s ‘Stacked’ (2012), created out of 760 symbolic Forever Bicycles, the most widely used bicycles in China, presented by Galleria Continua (San Gimignano, Beijing, Boissy-le-Châtel). Presented by Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac (Paris, Salzburg), Sturtevant’s ‘Gonzalez-Torres Untitled (Blue Placebo)’ (2004) is a repetition of the most iconic conceptual work by the Cuban-born American artist who died of AIDS in 1996. Lisson Gallery (London, Milan, New York, Singapore) will present Pedro Reyes’ ‘Disarm (Mechanized) ll’ (2014), part of his ambitious international project in which confiscated firearms are used to fabricate musical instruments. Kader Attia’s large-scale installation ‘Arab Spring’ (2014), presented by Galleria Continua (San Gimignano, Beijing, Boissy-le-Châtel), addresses the failure of the revolution that swept across the Middle East in early 2011. The idea behind the work was triggered by the plunder of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Attia’s installation employs those same showcases that were smashed during the attack, which the museum has kept on display as an act of remembrance. Whenever the work is shown, the artist reenacts the revolts by destroying the display cases with stones, again and again. The work reflects on how riots are motivated by the utopian revolutionary idea to improve the world through change. Presented by Luciana Brito Galeria (São Paulo), Héctor Zamora’s installation of eight suspended parachutes ‘OG-107 Scenery’ (2012) challenges the limits of gravity, commenting on political structures. As simple as walking may seem to most of us, for the characters in Martin Creed‘s video ‘Work No. 1701’ (2013), presented by Gavin Brown’s enterprise (New York, Los Angeles) and Hauser & Wirth (Zurich, New York, London), it is an concerted effort; their gaits and rhythms becoming conspicuous parts of their personality. Stephen Friedman Gallery (London) will show David Shrigley’s participatory work ‘Life Model’ (2012) in which a three-meter high sculpture will be displayed in a traditional life class drawing room, with visitors invited to draw what they see. Tanya Bonakdar Gallery (New York) will present Olafur Eliasson’s ‘Your space embracer’ (2004), a historically significant work in his practice using light as both tool and subject. John Gerrard’s ‘Solar Reserve (Tonopah, Nevada) 2014’ (2014), presented by Thomas Dane Gallery (London), is a computer simulation of a power plant surrounded by 10,000 mirrors which adjust themselves in real time with the weather.

Julius von Bismarck’s ‘Egocentric system’ (2015), presented by Marlborough Fine Art (London, New York, Madrid, Barcelona, Monaco), is a live performance by the artist on a rotating paraboloid, spanning the entirety of the show. Also on a stage, Gary Simmons' ‘Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark‘ (2014), presented jointly by Simon Lee Gallery (London, Hong Kong, New York), Metro Pictures (New York), Anthony Meier Fine Arts (San Francisco) and Regen Projects (Los Angeles), is a sculptural installation intended for live music performances. Inspired by Brazilian indigenous traditions OPAVIVARÁ!’s ‘Formosa Decelerator’ (2014), presented by A Gentil Carioca (Rio de Janeiro), is an interactive installation where visitors can rest in hammocks and create their own tea blends.

Wu Tsang’s video installation ‘DAMELO TODO // ODOT OLEMAD’ (2010-2011/2014) combines fiction with documentary to address the subject of ’safe spaces.’ The film is based on a short story by Raquel Gutierrez and on Tsang’s own experiences. The work will be presented by Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi (Berlin). Presented by Long March Space (Beijing), Liu Wei’s ‘The East No. 5’ (2015) is a mural-sized oil painting of vertical and horizontal lines, his largest painting to date. Presented by Hauser & Wirth (Zurich, New York, London) and ShanghART Gallery (Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore), Zhang Enli’s ‘Space Painting’ (2014) is created out of 205 cardboard boxes, the interior of which is painted by the artist.
Historical works shown within Unlimited will include Dadamaino’s ‘Il movimento delle cose’ (1993), presented by Tornabuoni Art (Paris, Florence, Milan, Forte dei Marmi, Portofino), a rare installation of her monumental polyester work. David Zwirner (New York, London) will present 'European Couples' (1966-1971) by Dan Flavin. Comprising nine works, the installation, dedicated to European friends and colleagues who influenced Flavin, demonstrates the artist's interest in serial and permutational configurations. Presented together, they produce an immersive, site-specific environment of light and color. Fergus McCaffrey (New York, Saint Barthelemy) will present ‘An Extended Gray Scale’ (1973), which provides an insight in Marcia Hafif’s investigation into minimalist painting beginning with a white canvas and ending with a completely black one. Presented by Sprüth Magers Berlin London (Berlin, London), Kenneth Anger’s most iconic film ‘Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome’ (1954-2014) will be screened in its most recent re-edited version. Never shown publically before as a whole, Emilio Vedova’s ‘…in continuum’ (1987-88), presented by Galleria dello Scudo (Verona), is a group of 109 works on canvas of various sizes placed to invade the architectural space. Peter Freeman, Inc. (New York, Paris), Galerie Jocelyn Wolff (Paris) and Skopia P.-H. Jaccaud (Geneva) will jointly present the largest ‘Wallformation Gelbmodellierung’ (1980-1981) by Franz Erhard Walther. Not having been displayed since 1989, the work can be seen as an image, a sculpture or an action space all at the same time. It will be shown together with historical photos of the artist’s original activation. Presented by Galerie Thomas Zander (Cologne) ‘Office at Night’ (1986) is one of Victor Burgin’s seminal and historical pieces which deconstructs Edward Hopper’s famous painting of the same name. Gianni Colombo’s experiential ‘Architettura cacogoniometrica. Ambiente’ (1984), presented by A arte Invernizzi (Milan), is made of PVC columns and redefined the environmental and the spatial idea of art at the time.

A limited-edition catalog, published by Hatje Cantz Publishers, accompanies the exhibition and includes descriptive texts and images about each artwork. The catalog is for sale at the show as well as in bookshops. Cost: CHF 40.
Los Angeles - The ACLU of California today launched Mobile
Justice CA, a free smart phone app allowing Californians to
automatically record and submit cell phone videos to their ACLU
affiliate when they feel law enforcement officers are violating
                civil rights.

Videos captured on the Mobile Justice CA app available for use
on Android and iOS phones will be transmitted to the ACLU and
preserved even if the user’s phone is later seized or
                destroyed.

“The concerns over police practices, including racial profiling
and excessive use of force, are very real for communities
across the state,” said Hector Villagra, executive director of
the ACLU of Southern California (ACLU SoCal). “This app will
help serve as a check on abuse – whether by police officers,
sheriff’s deputies, border patrol, or other officials –
allowing ordinary citizens to record and document any
                interaction with law enforcement.”

Mobile Justice CA can be downloaded free through Apple’s App
Store or Google Play. It enables users to register, record,
witness and report interactions with law enforcement and
                includes information on individual rights.

                    Record allows individuals to capture
exchanges with police officers and other law enforcement
officials in audio and video files that are automatically
sent to the ACLU of California.

Witness sends out an alert to anyone with
the app, giving them the option to go to the location and
document the encounter when police stop someone.

Report allows the app user to complete an
incident report and send it directly to the ACLU for
                    review.

Know Your Rights provides an overview of
what rights protect you when you are stopped by law
                    enforcement officers.

The Ella Baker Center is partnering with the ACLU of CA to
support the launch of the Mobile Justice CA app. EBC will
collaborate with the ACLU SoCal on broadening and deepening
community organizations' and community members' engagement with
                the app.

"People who historically have had very little power in the face
of law enforcement now have this tool to reclaim their power
and dignity," said Patrisse Cullors, director of the Truth and
Reinvestment Campaign at EBC. "Our vision is that this app will
ultimately help community members connect and organize to
respond to incidents of law enforcement violence, and then
share their experiences and knowledge with others."

“From Rodney King to Walter Scott, we’ve seen video bring
police abuse into public view that otherwise could have gone
ignored,” said Peter Bibring, director of police practices at
the ACLU SoCal. “Helping the public record law enforcement will
help deter misconduct and document abuse when it does happen,
so both officers and the criminal justice system can be held
                accountable.”

While Mobile Justice CA is intended for use by bystanders, the
ACLU of California recognizes that some users may want to use
it while they are involved in a police encounter. Anyone
interacting with law enforcement should announce that they are
reaching for a phone, and that they are attempting to access
the app to record the exchange. Users’ safety depends on their
ability to clearly communicate any actions they take and remain
                calm.

The ACLU of California will be working with community
organizations to provide “Know Your Rights” trainings on how to
use the app as well as basic rights related to interactions
with law enforcement. We encourage groups to contact us
                to arrange a training.

A grant from Susan Adelman and Claudio Llanos allowed the ACLU
of California to develop the Mobile Justice CA app.

Learn more about Mobile Justice CA and download the app from
the ACLU of SoCal website or mobilejusticeca.org.

The ACLU of California is a collaboration of the three ACLU
affiliates in the state—the ACLU of Northern California, the
