Please check back for the historical dedication to Emily Harvey Gallery.
Emily Harvey Gallery Reliquary is on artistorganizedart.org.
As you may know, Emily Harvey died on Monday, November 8th.
She fought her cancer hard, and prolonged her life beyond the usual expectations
for the illness she had. She used that time to build The Emily Harvey Foundation.
The purpose of the Foundation is to provide residencies for artists in Venice.
Emily had apartments in Venice, some occupied by Venetian tenants, and some designated
for use by artists. It was Emily's generous wish that her support for her friends
in the international avant-garde community should not end with her death.
It was also Emily's wish that her loft at 537 Broadway should pass into the Foundation,
and continue to be used as it was used in her lifetime. Emily's decision was based
on her sense of history, her desire to provide a New York headquarters for her
Foundation, a home for her collection, and a much-needed venue for her artist
friends.
Over the years, Olga Adorno, Eric Andersen, Ay-o, Brian Buczak, Philip Corner,
Jean Dupuy, Henry Flynt, Robert Filliou, Albert Fine, Geoffrey Hendricks, Christer
Hennix, Dick Higgins, Ray Johnson, Joe Jones, Milan Knizak, Alison Knowles, George
Maciunas, Jackson Mac Low, Larry Miller, Alain Arias-Misson, Charlotte Moorman,
Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Takako Saito, Carolee Schneemann, Daniel Spoerri,
Berty Skuber, Anne Tardos, Ben Vautier, Yoshi Wada, Bob Watts, Emmett Williams,
Christian Xatrec, LaMonte Young, Marian Zazeela, and many others exhibited there.
Equally important were the gatherings and events that took place in the gallery,
bringing together artists, writers, critics and art historians.
Emily was asked once why she did not replace the gallery floor, which is old,
pitted, and warped in spots. She replied that she could not consider changing
it. Jean Dupuy had built an artwork into it. It had been a surface for innumerable
performances by artists she loved. John Cage had walked its length many times
in deep discussion.
This gallery is an historical space: before being sold to Emily by Jean Dupuy,
it was sold to Jean Dupuy by George Maciunas, and Emily kept it faithful to its
origins. We intend to keep that faith.
Emily appointed us to guide her projects and her Foundation. We promise to do
our best to fulfill her wishes. We ask for your good will and moral support. We
will need it to do all we have to do.
