Los Angeles - The ACLU of California today launched Mobile Justice CA, a free smart phone app allowing Californians to automatically record and submit cell phone videos to their ACLU affiliate when they feel law enforcement officers are violating civil rights.

Videos captured on the Mobile Justice CA app available for use on Android and iOS phones will be transmitted to the ACLU and preserved even if the user’s phone is later seized or destroyed.

“The concerns over police practices, including racial profiling and excessive use of force, are very real for communities across the state,” said Hector Villagra, executive director of the ACLU of Southern California (ACLU SoCal). “This app will help serve as a check on abuse – whether by police officers, sheriff’s deputies, border patrol, or other officials – allowing ordinary citizens to record and document any interaction with law enforcement.”

Mobile Justice CA can be downloaded free through Apple’s App Store or Google Play. It enables users to register, record, witness and report interactions with law enforcement and includes information on individual rights.

  • Record allows individuals to capture exchanges with police officers and other law enforcement officials in audio and video files that are automatically sent to the ACLU of California.

  • Witness sends out an alert to anyone with the app, giving them the option to go to the location and document the encounter when police stop someone.

  • Report allows the app user to complete an incident report and send it directly to the ACLU for review.

  • Know Your Rights provides an overview of what rights protect you when you are stopped by law enforcement officers.

The Ella Baker Center is partnering with the ACLU of CA to support the launch of the Mobile Justice CA app. EBC will collaborate with the ACLU SoCal on broadening and deepening community organizations' and community members' engagement with the app.

"People who historically have had very little power in the face of law enforcement now have this tool to reclaim their power and dignity," said Patrisse Cullors, director of the Truth and Reinvestment Campaign at EBC. "Our vision is that this app will ultimately help community members connect and organize to respond to incidents of law enforcement violence, and then share their experiences and knowledge with others."

“From Rodney King to Walter Scott, we’ve seen video bring police abuse into public view that otherwise could have gone ignored,” said Peter Bibring, director of police practices at the ACLU SoCal. “Helping the public record law enforcement will help deter misconduct and document abuse when it does happen, so both officers and the criminal justice system can be held accountable.”

While Mobile Justice CA is intended for use by bystanders, the ACLU of California recognizes that some users may want to use it while they are involved in a police encounter. Anyone interacting with law enforcement should announce that they are reaching for a phone, and that they are attempting to access the app to record the exchange. Users’ safety depends on their ability to clearly communicate any actions they take and remain calm.

The ACLU of California will be working with community organizations to provide “Know Your Rights” trainings on how to use the app as well as basic rights related to interactions with law enforcement.  We encourage groups to contact us to arrange a training.

A grant from Susan Adelman and Claudio Llanos allowed the ACLU of California to develop the Mobile Justice CA app.

Learn more about Mobile Justice CA and download the app from the ACLU of SoCal website or mobilejusticeca.org.

The ACLU of California is a collaboration of the three ACLU affiliates in the state—the ACLU of Northern California, the ACLU of Southern California, and the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties.

For more information on the app, including a video, FAQ, and one-page overview of how to use the app, please see: https://www.mobilejusticeca.org/press-kit

PRESS RELEASE
BASELAPRIL | 202015

Art Basel to present a new installation by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Nikolaus Hirsch, Michel Müller and Antto
Melasniemi in Basel this June
.

For the duration of Art Basel, 'DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY' by conceptual artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, German architects Nikolaus Hirsch/Michel Müller and Finnish chef Antto Melasniemi will be installed on Messeplatz in Basel. The new work will be an extension of Rirkrit Tiravanija's and Thai artist Kamin Lertchaiprasert's project 'the land', a self-sustaining artistic community near Chiang Mai in Thailand that engages with the idea of an artistic utopia, presenting an ecological and sustainable model for future artistic practice. Including a herbal garden, kitchen, communal dining and meeting area, the project will involve collaborations with engineers Bollinger + Grohmann and students from the Institute of Art of the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel and the Städelschule in Frankfurt to activate the work during the fair.

'DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY' can be seen and experienced as a visually striking large-scale work at the entrance to the fair and as a platform for communication. The installation invites the audience to enter a sphere of recovery and community amidst the excitement of the art fair. Creating a place of hospitality, visitors can engage through the activities on offer, such as the drinking of herbal tea plucked fresh from the on-site garden, the preparation and eating of food. The food will be rooted in Thai tradition and will be available with no fixed schedule, menu or price list: compensation is self-determined, by self-serving, serving others, donations or even participating in the cooking or washing up.

The activities and events will be run in close collaboration with students from Basel and Frankfurt, who will be working alongside Tiravanija and Melasniemi running the kitchen, preparing food and organizing additional events. Both schools, Städelschule in Frankfurt and the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel, have a cooking tradition with students being experienced in running experimental kitchens and testing new concepts of hospitality.

The installation will consist of a modular bamboo and steel structure designed by Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Müller within which the various themes of the project will be played out. Developed and executed in collaboration with Finnish chef Antto Melasniemi, the program will explore an ecological cycle beginning with the growing of herbs and continuing on to their use in the production of tea and culinary creations. Based on the idea of self-sufficiency, 'DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY' will employ various alternative energy models including a solar kitchen.

The installation will function as a platform to further develop the artists' ongoing 'the land' project in the form of a series of mini-symposia hosted by Hans Ulrich Obrist on themes and issues relating to the project.

At the end of the show, following its concept of transfer, the installation's structure will be shipped to 'the land' in Chiang Mai where it will form the basis for a new workshop building that will host a range of artistic projects including artistic residencies, workshops, and seminars. 'DO WE DREAM UNDER THE SAME SKY' is commissioned by Art Basel.

In 2004 he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on planning methods of adaptable architecture. Müller´s ongoing work on institutional models resulted in projects such as the Bockenheimer Depot Theater (with William Forsythe), Unitednationsplaza in Berlin (with Anton Vidokle), and Cybermohalla Hub in Delhi.

Antto Melasniemi
Besides running three restaurants in Helsinki Antto Melasniemi has collaborated alongside artists and designers like Martí Guixé, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Klaus Haapaniemi on performative high-concept projects like HelYes, the Solar Kitchen Restaurant and the Trojan Bar. ´Hospitality is the key for me,’ says Antto, referring to his near-obsession in making people feel. He is interested in food as a cultural phenomenon and a way of communication The importance of dining or sharing a meal doesn’t just begin and end with what is on the plate. ´It is all the things around and connected the food that makes it fascinating`.

About 'the land'
'The land' was initiated by Rirkrit Tiravanija and Kamin Lertchaiprasert as a self-sustaining environment emerging from the artistic community. 'The land' is located in the northern part of Thailand, near the village of Sanpathong, 20 km southwest of the city of Chiang Mai. It is intended to be cultivated as an open space free of ownership, an environment conducive to discussions and experimentation in the fields of culture. 'The land' is open to the day-to-day activities of local living (i.e., the cultivation of rice) and to the neighboring community. On the social field of 'the land', artistic practices are discussed and tested. A hybrid of innovation and traditionalism, 'the land' juxtaposes contemporary materials and technologies with ancient forms of practice.

While 'the land' is inherently a rice field and a garden, freely accessible to all, it also supports architectural constructions that may be utilized in a variety of ways: from shelters for sleeping to kitchens for cooking to platforms for lectures or performances. A number of artists and architects are involved in this aspect of the land's potential, though participation is not confined solely to those in the arts. The people who have contributed to the land's structure thus far hail from both local and international backgrounds, with artists such as: Kamin Lertchaiprasert, Tobias Rehberger, Philippe Parreno, François Roche, Angkrit Ajchariyasophon, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Superflex, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. The most recent project at 'the land' will be designed by Frankfurt-based architects Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Müller: a structure that comprises studios, workshop space, and shelter, and involves a number of international contributors and partners.

Omi International Arts Center Announces 2015 Francis Greenburger Award Winners

Five Established Artists Receive the Francis J. Greenburger Award for a Total of $62,500

For Immediate Release

New York, NY – Omi International Arts Center (Omi) announce today the five artists who will receive the 2015 Francis J. Greenburger Award, a $12,500 prize that aims to honor established artists whose extraordinary merit within the art world has not been fully recognized by the public. Francis J. Greenburger, founder of Omi and notable New York City real estate developer, invited an acclaimed artist, art historian, museum professional, gallerist and collector to each select one recipient whom they believe to fulfill the mission of the award. The awards, totaling $62,500, will be presented in New York City on April 21, 2015 during a ceremony at the New Museum from 6 to 8 p.m.

The distinguished group of artists includes Charles Juhász-Alvarado, Steve Wolfe, Alison Knowles, Suchan Kinoshita and Malcolm Morley. These notable artists were selected by Ursula von Rydingsvard, Roland J. Augustine, Claire Bishop, Oliver Kruse, and Andy and Christine Hall, respectively.

“Omi International Arts Center constantly strives to foster an environment of creative exploration and professional opportunity. Each year, this ceremony is a chance for incredible artists to gain increased exposure for their work,” said Francis J. Greenburger, Founder of Omi International Arts Center and Chairman of Time Equities, Inc. “It’s our honor to award these individuals, who we believe are shaping the art world of tomorrow, with a platform to engage with an art-focused audience and earn increased recognition for their contributions.”

Award Recipient and Presenter Information:
Charles Juhász-Alvarado, presented by Ursula von Rydingsvard
  • Charles Juhász-Alvarado grew up between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. He completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Art at Yale University. He currently resides in Puerto Rico, and is a professor of sculpture at the School of Fine Arts (Escuela de Artes Plásticas). His work investigates, through craft, the diverse socio-cultural influences, frequently alluding to his own heterogeneous background and the historical and political conditions of the geographic and imaginary spaces that shape his relationships.
  • Ursula von Rydingsvard creates massive, abstract sculptures resembling wooden bowls, tools, and walls, echoing the artist’s family heritage in pre-industrial Poland before World War II. Von Rydingsvard has received many awards, including a Joan Mitchell Award (1997); an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1994); fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (1983) and the National Endowment for the Arts (1979, 1986); and exhibition prizes from the International Association of Art Critics (1992, 2000).
Steve Wolfe, selected by Roland Augustine
  • Steve Wolfe re-creates worn books and used records, primarily from the 1960s and 1970s, that have influenced his own personal and artistic sensibilities. Working in the tradition of trompe l’oeil, Wolfe creates pieces that quite literally “fool the eye” on first inspection. These tattered books and worn LPs are tangible manifestations of a fertile moment in American intellectual history. Wolfe’s faithful reconstructions evoke an unexpected play between humble self-effacement and culture’s powerful capacity to have impact on one’s existence. Steve Wolfe’s work has been collected by numerous prominent public and private collections, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Menil Collection, Houston, The Dallas Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
  • Roland J. Augustine co-founded Luhring Augustine Gallery with Lawrence R. Luhring in 1985. The gallery, now located on 24th Street in Chelsea with an additional exhibition space in Bushwick, Brooklyn, represents an international group of contemporary artists and also specializes in the resale of historical works, from art of the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Augustine currently serves on the board of several businesses, foundations, and humanitarian organizations including Bard College, AXA Art Insurance, and the Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation.
Alison Knowles, selected by Claire Bishop
  • Alison Knowles is a Fluxus artist who works across media, including performance and experimental book art. In 1966, Knowles’ The House of Dust, part of James Tenney’s mainframe computer work in chance based, or aleatory, art was recognized at the time as the first computer poem on record, and won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1968. Knowles work has been in shown in major exhibitions at the Tate Museum, London (1968), the Guggenheim, New York (2009), MoMA, New York (2011), and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2014). In May 2011, Knowles was invited to appear at The White House in An Evening of Poetry.
  • Claire Bishop is an art historian and critic. She currently teaches Contemporary Art at the CUNY Graduate Center. Prior to this, she taught at Warwick University (UK) and the Royal College of Art, London. She is a regular contributor to Artforum and has had numerous books published. In addition to her criticism and scholarly work, she has curated exhibitions of art.
Suchan Kinoshita, presented by Oliver Kruse
  • Suchan Kinoshita was born in Tokyo, Japan. She moved to Germany to study music in Cologne. She participated in Theater am Marienplatz (TAM) in Krefeld Fischeln from 1983 to 1989. She performed in pieces by composers including Carola Bauckholt, Mauricio Kagel, Dierter Schnebel, Gerhard Rühm, and developed her own works. She then pursued postgraduate study at the Jan van Eyck Academie from 1988-90. Kinoshita won the Prix de Rome in 1993 and was selected for the PS1 Studio Program in New York from 1993-94.
  • Oliver Kruse is the chairman of the board of the Insel Hombroich Museum in Neiss, Germany. He is a professor at the Peter Behren School of Architecture, Dusseldorf, and has been a member of the board of Architecture Omi since 2009. He also maintains an artistic practice, working in sculpture, drawing, and video, which he has been exhibiting since 1993.
Malcolm Morley, selected by Christine and Andy Hall
  • Malcolm Morley is a painter who has been acknowledged as one of the earliest innovators of “super-realism,” which developed as a counterpoint to Pop Art in the 1960s. Over the course of his distinguished career, Morley has defied stylistic characterization, moving by turns through so-called abstract, realist, neo-romantic, and neo-expressionist painterly modes, while being attentive to his own biographical experiences. He has exhibited across Europe and North America since 1964. His first retrospective, organized in 1983 by the Whitechapel Art Gallery, traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Brooklyn Museum.
  • Christine and Andy Hall have been collectors of contemporary art since the 1980′s. Together, in 2007 they founded the Hall Art Foundation, which makes postwar and contemporary art works from its own collection and that of the Halls available for the enjoyment and education of the public.

The awards were founded in 1986 after a conversation Mr. Greenburger had with his friends, André Emmerich and Clement Greenburg, during which André said, “The best and brightest artist of each generation are known, but not to everyone. Ask the inner circle and they can tell you.” This statement is the inspiration and founding principle of the Francis J. Greenburger Awards.

Since 1986, Omi International Arts Center has awarded 45 artists the prestigious award and this year the award adds five impressive artists to its roster of winners.

The event is open to the public, and those interested must RSVP by April 13 by contacting greenburgerawards@timeequities.com. For more information visit: http://www.omiartscenter.org and select ‘Francis J. Greenburger Awards’ under the calendar tab.

Who we are and what we do?

Flanders Arts Institute (Kunstenpunt) is a brand-new organisation that was founded on 1 January 2015 as a result of the merger of the Flemish Institute for Visual, Audiovisual and Media Art (BAM), the Flanders Music Centre (MCV) and the Institute for the Performing Arts (VTi). In the service of the arts sector, it becomes the central point of contact for all visual and performing arts and for all music genres, both national and international. The organisation’s core tasks are practice development, field research and the expansion of collective (inter)national relations. It provides information
and documentation, and stimulates the practice of artists and art organisations. Its mission is to increase the awareness and visibility of the Flemish arts scene on an international level through international collaboration, communication and exchange.
