BALTIMORE

GAIA Commissioned
By Baltimore Museum Of Art
Nov 18, 2012 – May 5, 2013

When Baltimore Museum Of Art re-opens its contemporary galleries on November 18 it will include a commissioned work for the space by street artist Gaia. A temporary two-dimensional work will be installed in one of the new spaces of the BMA’s contemporary wing. For this commission Gaia is inspired by the museum’s iconic painting by Paul Gauguin, Woman of the Mango, and its adjacent Remington neighborhood.

Gaia, a Baltimore-based street artist, whose name stands for Earth Goddess, is known for using animal imagery to convey nature’s voice in urban landscapes, often evoking a sense of mythical feedback as an omen from global warming. Other subjects include portraits of urban developers Nelson Rockefeller, Robert Moses, Henry Flagler, James Rouse, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. Gaia recently curated the multi-site mural project Open Walls Baltimore (OWB) which was scheduled to include fellow artists Maya Hayuk, Swoon, Chris Stain, MOMO, Freddy Sam, Jaz, Jetsonorama, Overunder, Vhils, Nanook, Mata Ruda, Specter, Interesni Kaski, Ever, Doodles, John Ahearn and Sten & Lex.

The carrier pigeon perched within a hand is an image that I have revisited many times in the past year. Much like the hybridized creatures I have produced in the past, this gesture displays a moment of domination and submission but also of steward and nature. Pigeons are beautiful creatures and one of the few that can tolerate the city. This print is a celebration of a dying urban sport and of an unsung animal.” – Gaia

Lance Fung Leads 5 Year Public Art Campaign In Atlantic City

Experimental Curator Lance Fung To Transform Atlantic City
In A 5 Year Public Art Campaign

We all know public art effects culture in ways far greater than the purse, but suddenly Atlantic City’s community stakeholders, both public and private are sending a message. Art and culture can expose the elusive quality of place by positively influencing a neighborhood and a city. Earlier today I was at an exciting and inspiring event at Lance Fung’s SOHO loft. There I learned the Atlantic City Alliance (ACA) a newly formed non profit, has hired Lance and his group, Fung Collaboratives, to transform Atlantic City. They will collaborate to turn many entire vacant lots into commissioned works of art or as Lance describes them, magical green spaces. I find it amazing that in this economy the ACA holds, that for this country’s cities, right now art and culture are key. As daring a collaborationist as ever, Lance will triangulate Atla ntic City with an exquisite 5 year long public art exhibition that will complete this message.

Predictably, Lance brings together international artists and architects to take on Atlantic City’s challenging sites. Yet, complimenting these large scale attractions, he’s planning programs to engage and benefit local community at even the smallest scale, encouraging local input and further energizing community and it’s artists. The project is designed to enrich the community through its own participation by engaging local residents, new visitors and art lovers alike to experience large scale contemporary art outside of the gallery, to come out and play together, to have a stake in the improving physical landscape and to enjoy new, free and interactive experiences catered to people rather than cars and trucks.

What Lance described at his gathering sounded sweeping and visionary, yet community-driven and inclusive. The commissions have a sense of destination, but are culturally aware. He’s calling for works that become places which foster social interaction and balance physical, social and spiritual qualities. Yet, while he’s working through an overarching idea and commissioning large scale transformations, these are complimented by a community invested, bottom-up approach, which identifies community talents and assets that provide valuable insights as to what is meaningful to Atlantic City residents.

San Francisco and New York-based curator Lance Fung founded his company in 1999 as an arts organization without borders. His exhibitions have been featured at the Torino and Beijing Olympics, the city of San Francisco, and in Egypt. He was the curator of the 2008 Site Santa Fe Biennial, Lucky Number 7. Lance Fung is best known for the 2004 “The Snow Show” exhibition in Finland, having presented the collaborative works of thirty internationally recognized artists and architects, including Yoko Ono, Sir Norman Foster, Kiki Smith and Tadao Ando.

“While the world’s great museums showcase art for appreciation as well as scholarship, moving art outside to the blank canvas of the sky, the ocean and the historic Boardwalk here in Atlantic City can be a catalyst to evolve how people think about our city,” – Liza Cartmell, president of the Atlantic City Alliance. “We know that the greater Atlantic City community will also benefit from these distinctly unique public art projects,” – CRDA Executive Director John Palmieri.

Montreal-based new media and entertainment studio, Moment Factory has also teamed up with the ACA to develop a highly sophisticated, 3D projection show celebrating the façade of Boardwalk Hall. Set to open this summer, the permanent installation offers a free show every night, all year long. Moment Factory has created extraordinary multimedia environments and groundbreaking interactive experiences for live shows, public spaces, events, brands and cultural institutions since 2001, for clients like Cirque du Soleil, Jay-Z, Disney, Céline Dion, Microsoft and for Madonna’s new MDNA world tour.

The ACA is a recently established New Jersey not-for-profit corporation whose primary mission is to develop and implement a full-scale, broad-based, multi-year marketing program for Atlantic City. The ACA works with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) to market and promote the Tourism District via a public/private partnership. The ACA also works with local and state government, the private sector and other organizations to further enhance the marketing program.

George by Jeffrey Perkins – Kickstarter

Hurray!

We have reached our goal today, one day ahead of schedule! Thanks to all of you great people who have been so supportive, which has and will further inspire us to bring forth a really great and wide portrait of George Maciunas.

Raising $20,000 on Kickstarter is a great achievement and we want to tell you how grateful that we are for your generous support, however, the project will need more money for the future steps in the filmmaking. Our project will be online until Friday (midnight) which means we are still welcoming donations and encourage you to keep spreading the word even though we have met our goal.

Also, we plan to create a thank you party in the near future here in NYC, so please stay tuned!

With my Best Wishes

Kickstarter Campaign

George by Jeffrey Perkins – Kickstarter

Only A Few Days Remain
Help Finance This Documentary (Gifts Available)

Pledge $50 or more and get a self-portrait photograph (8×10) of George Maciunas AND a signed DVD of ‘GEORGE’. Peter Halley just donated 4 screen prints to the campaign.

Dear Friends,

As some of you may or may not know, I am currently in the middle of making a feature length documentary portrait film about George Maciunas, the founder and impresario of Fluxus. The life and work of Maciunas exemplifies the collaborative spirit that has defined my own practice and has had great influence on generations of artists to follow.

George Maciunas (1931-1978) was a Lithuanian born artist, art-historian, graphic designer, architect, urban planner, composer and contractor. Through his tireless efforts, Maciunas has influenced and shaped the course of contemporary art. He is also known for creating the first 15 artist run co-op buildings in SoHo. This documentary film portrait will provide insight into the life of a visionary revolutionary artist.

For the last two years I have been traveling around Europe, America and Japan, to film around 40 interviews with friends, family, scholars and professional associates of George Maciunas and Fluxus, including Jonas Mekas, Yoko Ono, Richard Foreman, Ay-O, and Jon Hendricks. I, along with the generous help of dedicated volunteers, have compiled a wide selection of photographs, articles, archival film and Fluxus work from the most important Fluxus collections in the world, including the Jean Brown Archive at The Getty Research Institute, The Sohm Archive at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, The Netherlands Fotomuseum, MoMA, and private sources.

We are now at the stage where in order to complete the film we are in much need of financial support. It is our mission to honor the legacy of George Maciunas which future generations can enjoy, learn and become inspired by. Our goal is to raise $20,000, all of which will go towards production costs: pre-editing, editing, acquisition of additional media, including still photographs and archival footage and the list goes on. As a platform to raise these costs we will go through a site called ‘Kickstarter’ in which we have especially created a teaser for you all to see.

Kickstarter is an all or nothing fundraiser, accessible for everyone to view and donate money if they see fit; if we reach our goal your card will be charged and you will receive your reward based upon your level of contribution. You can visit our page by clicking this link:
