ON THE ADDRESSEE
Guest edited by Pedro A.H. Paixão
With special contributions by Giorgio Agamben, Matilde Campilho, Emanuele Coccia, Alexandre Conefrey, Bernardo Simões Correia, Emanuela De Cecco, Alessandro Di Pietro, Joana Escoval, Donna Ferrato, Toni Hildebrandt, Jean-Luc Nancy, Alexandre Nodari, Yasmil Raymond, Isabella Rodriguez, Fabián Ludueña Romandini, Jorge Leandro Rosa and Veronica Stigger, and also with work by Bas Jan Ader, Paulo Brighenti, Berta Ehrlich, Nan Goldin, Jean-Luc Moulène, Rui Moreira, Bruce Nauman, António Poppe, Cindy Sherman and André Vallias
Issue 130, “On the Addressee,” explores a bond experienced between friends, artists and/or writers from different generations and across centuries, exposing what is sharable in our time and bringing new light to the question of the Addressee. Almost a century after the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam wrote a homonym essay in 1913, we are reconsidering the question he asked, “To whom does the poet speak?” while he was considering a call another Russian poet addressed in 1828 to a posthumous reader. Issue 130 considers a secret and urgent call that artists, poets and thinkers inscribe in their most intimate and demanding works: a call addressed to unknowable or posthumous addressees. We are also paying tribute to our 1990 edition, issue 75, guest edited by the Italian publisher Ginevra Bompiani, titled “The Mood of Our Time.” We are thinking about, in the idea of “mood,” whether it has a temporary or lasting effect on ourselves and on the present time: how do we engage in the possibility of sharing such lasting effects? What is left at the core of our intimacy that is owned by no one, and can be transmitted in a “sharing” without presuppositions or sovereign figures? We are seeking to know in our experiences in art today what a “call” and an “addressee” are by listening to earlier calls left by thinkers like Giorgio Agamben or Jean-Luc Nancy, in Bompiani’s volume and by recalling the human relationship with the Earth as well as relations between, parent and child, teacher and student, and the unknowable or posthumous friend.
Pedro A.H. Paixão is an artist, scholar, filmmaker and editor from Lisbon living in Milan, Italy, who works mainly with theory and practice of drawing in relation to philosophy. He was born in Lobito (Angola) in 1971, lived between Lisbon, Chicago, Venice, Oporto, and Milan, and concluded his studies in Fine Arts (MFA) and Philosophy (PhD). His artwork is represented by Galeria 111, in Lisbon and Oporto, and he is a research member of the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Oporto and directs a collection for the publisher Documenta, in Lisbon.

Contagious Creativity
JUJU is an iPhone application that allows users to view and create their own visual expressions by combining the work of a multitude of artists, using a licensed library of art. Released in late June 2014, JUJU quickly climbed to the 163rd highest grossing app in the US market, out of tens of thousands in the App Store. Following closely on the heels of this success, JUJU has submitted a proposal to speak at SXSW (South By Southwest), and has progressed to the public voting stage of panel selection. JUJU – Art On Your iPhone
JUJU wants to put the art economy back in the hands of artists, and to ignite the flame of creativity that lies inside each one of us. We’re on a mission to use technology to its full potential – putting the ability to view and create art at everyone’s fingertips, and opening up new channels for artists to receive income and support.
We’ve started by building a mobile platform where users can view, play with and create their own expressions using a licensed library of artwork. (JUJU is currently available for iOS 7 in the App Store, a version for Android is coming soon!)
With this first bridge built, our next step is to bring a much needed conversation about creativity to the big stage.
We’re submitting a speaking proposal for SXSW (“South by Southwest”), where the sharpest minds in interactive technology will be gathering by the thousands in March 2015.
Help Artists Succeed
In just two minutes of your time, you can help our proposal to succeed.
Please visit the SXSW Panel Picker website and give us the thumbs up, and leave a comment to let us know what this conversation means to you. Lastly, please share the proposal with your networks.

A Call For Ecological Action – John Paul II
In this compilation of lost teachings John Paul II contemplates St. Francis of Assisi while inspiring urgent ecological action

At home in prayer outdoors, John Paul II looked to St. Francis of Assisi, as a model for saving our endagered world, as is described in Following St. Francis: John Paul II’s Call For Ecological Action by Marybeth Lorbiecki, Rizzoli ExLibris, 2014. (available online)

Following St. Francis
John Paul II’s Call For Ecological Action
The Lost Teachings of John Paul II on Ecology
Elected second youngest Pope in history in 1978, John Paul II helped inspire the Solidarity movement in Poland and launched a peaceful and cultural revolution throughout the entire Western World. Dubbed the Son of Poland under the Medal of Freedom in 2004, referred to as The First World Leader and The Greatest Political Actor of Our Time in 2005 and canonized a Saint in 2014, John Paul II has always inspired meaningful change. This dynamic book provides a fresh look at urgent environmental problems by exploring the lost ecological teachings of one of our most instrumental catalysts of positive social change. Author Marybeth Lorbiecki presents John Paul II’s invigorating teachings about our ecological responsibilities and their sources. She includes their specific counsel on twelve ecological crises facing the world, which are provocative and radical, and concludes with key sections on transformation and restoration. This work is the only one to have collected the complete range of John Paul II’s environmental teachings. (available online)
Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and founder of 350.org, provides the book’s foreword, demonstrating the importance of these teachings for the entire environmental movement.
Following St. Francis: John Paul II’s Call For Ecological Action shows John Paul II as an uncompromising advocate for ecological responsibility throughout his papacy and reveals his perspective that the development of a just human society is closely tied with preserving the health of our planet. He shows how harming our natural systems harms the poor. An adamant environmental activist in the name of faith and human citizenship, John Paul II alerts us that our industrialized world is producing a “culture of waste” both ecologically and economically, a culture far more concerned with “having” than with “being.” We have removed ourselves from the essential meaning of life and the means to sustain life, while destroying ourselves spiritually, morally, emotionally and economically, as we have gradually separated ourselves from the natural world in which we live. At the same time, he demonstrates that ecological disasters can serve to be catalysts to positive transformations.
“..artists, in particular, are called upon to collectively use their power to inspire others in this work” stated the former Pope. Following St. Francis: John Paul II’s Call For Ecological Action provides a path forward for all people.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Marybeth Lorbiecki has been at work on environmental issues for more than twenty years and has been consulted by the Holy See about her work on John Paul II’s ecological writings. She is currently the Director of the Interfaith Ocean Ethics Campaign (IOEC), a joint program of the Franciscan Action Network (FAN) and the National Religious Coalition on Creation Care (NRCCC). Lance Fung To Curate Five Temporary Monuments

Washington DC – The exhibition Nonuments opens on September 6th and runs for one month

Media Contact:
John Talley, Executive Director of Fung Collaboratives
info@fungcollaboratives.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Washington DC – The exhibition Nonuments opens on September 6th and runs for one month. Part of the second installation of the public art initiative 5 x 5, organized by the Washington DC commission for arts and humamities, curator Lance Fung has invited six visionary artists to create 5 ambitions, large-scale artworks. These visually stunning yet conceptually challenging nonuments will be situated on an empty lot in the SW neighborhood of Washington DC. This 1.5 acre empty lot was generously provided by the city to be transformed by the Fung Collaboratives team into a temporary park. Artists from across the country will create projects engaging the complexities of the neighborhood as well as social issues across the country. The projects embrace all aspects of the city, including its remarkable history, environmental concerns, migration, the devaluing of hard labor, and human trafficking.
In addition to the invited artists, many local artists, residents and business owners from the SW neighborhood will partner with Fung Collaboratives to make this a grass roots success as well as an art exhibition with the highest standards. Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) will lend its expertise and contacts to reach out to the local community and bring the most appropriate partnerships as well as encourage volunteerism. In short, Nonuments is about community, collaboration and social exchange.
As stated in Fung’s curatorial statement, “Washington DC, our nation’s capital, is renowned for its grand monuments honoring the history and achievements of great Americans. But behind the federal face of official Washington, there is a real city with distinctive neighborhoods filled with passionate citizens living their lives. For my curatorial contribution to 5 x 5, I envision Nonuments— a temporary sculpture park featuring ‘monuments’ devoted not to the great but to ordinary people, to the ideals of democracy, and to the common struggles of humanity.” He continues to say, “The more that I work in the public realm, the more I realize that I want my projects to be more than window dressing for neglected urban areas—for me, it is more important to create projects that are useful and appreciated by local residents. The biggest challenge is finding a way to make projects that not only fulfill this goal, but also present challenging art exhibitions featuring works of the highest artistic standards.”
